During any weekend, rain or shine, Omaha’s downtown Old
Market is always booming with people shopping, eating out, bar hoping, or even
attending wedding receptions. Although I don’t make it down to the Old Market
as much as I’d like to, when I do stop down I make it a top priority to visit
Second Chance Antiques and Collectibles. Many people don’t realize how much of
a bargain hunter and vintage collector I am. I am all about awesome vintage
finds from furniture, clothing and shoes, handbags, china, and even small knick
knacks. This store has it all in one place.
What is unique about this store is the wide variety of items
that the place buys and sells. The variety attracts some of the strangest
people and the strangest requests for items, but this store has managed to
capitalize on this market. The store offers an upper and a basement level
packed tight with the coolest finds. The upper level mostly houses antique
furniture, china, jewelry, books, and collectables. The store even has building
materials and other miscellaneous hardware items for revamping any living
space. The lower level of the store is dedicated to clothing, shoes, and other
accessories such as hats and bags. I mostly visit the basement of this store to
see all of the wacky outfits that were popular decades ago. But every now and
then, I can find the coolest pair of worn in boots or a handmade vintage brooch
to accentuate any outfit.
Don’t be scared by the numerous cats running around the
store. The owners like having the cats nearby to greet customers. Though it may
seem a tad creepy, the cats add to the charm of the store.
Visit Second Chance Antiques at 11th and Jackson
in the Old Market. But make sure that you go when you don’t have anywhere to
be. It is not unheard of to spend a couple of hours browsing the selection that
the store has to offer. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
I never visit this antique store however my family enjoys going to antique malls. When we would make trips from Omaha back home to Kansas City and we would have extra time we would visit antique malls along I-29 just for fun. These kind of stores a personality that not many other stores have. They sell things from many generations. You can always find something cool or interesting in these stores. Whether is is a Coca Cola bottle from the 50s or action figures from the 70s or China or a poster from the 2000s. When I was younger I collected Beanie Babies and these antique malls were a good place to find them. I often buy gifts for people at antique stores because you can find something for everyone there and usually not very many people have the things at the store so I know they will like it and it is something the do not have. I have recently visited the Aardvark Antique Mall in Lincoln out near 56th Street and I-80 just for fun. You are right it is easy to kill a couple of hours in stores like these. Even if you do not buy anything, the things in the store are interesting to look at so it is worth the time you spend there. Entering into a antique store is like stepping into a time machine.
ReplyDeleteI think that all of your blog posts are well thought out and on point. You have chosen a wide range of subjects which allow any reader to understand where you are coming from and also why you have chosen to create the blog. I think that just reviewing the posts you have made allows most folks to get a pretty good idea both where you are coming from and where you are going. I think the only improvement that could be made is to be a bit more personal . I say this because while your posts are very much about yourself they are a bit detached. This does not really take away from your posts as a whole but it is something to keep in mind if you pursue this sort of writing in the future. I especially like your appeal toward your upbringing and think that although it is hard to talk about where we are from as individuals it real adds a lot to our writing. I enjoyed having call with you and wish you luck in your future writing.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate to being obsessed with antiques and collectibles. I don't have much time for it anymore, but I used to pretty much live in antique stores and my house was packed with stuff I'd found. One of my favorite places for this is Timeless Treasures in Lincoln, where I bought this super sweet vintage jar to put change in and which now offers vintage clothes from a store that closed a couple of years ago. I could spend hours wandering around and finding little things to take home. It's probably a good thing that I don't have much time for this anymore, because I would be penniless. You mentioned the store in Omaha and it reminded me of a similar store in the Old Market (I'm blanking on the name) where I bought this sweet pair of vintage suede pumps that look pretty amazing on my clown feet. I was super excited to find them because I had never before found a pair of vintage shoes in a store like that that actually fit, and I'd never found a pair of shoes that made my feet look smaller. I can really relate to that feeling you get when you find an antique or vintage item that 'fits' your life in whatever way.
